Confusing Descending Words
“Down with”
- On one hand: I’m down with Dre.
- On the other: Down with Communism!
I suppose this is part of the poetic charm of the English language.
“Drop”
- On one hand: Sony dropped their new line of cameras today
- On the other: Sony dropped their old line of cameras today
Popular with gadget bloggers, this exact-same-wording-to-mean-the-exact-opposite-thing is neither charming nor poetic. It’s just plain confusing and should be done away with completely. So, let’s just go ahead and stop using “drop” to mean “released”, ok? We’re not waiting for a parachute shipment from a military cargo jet here.
